Just Plain Odd
MY LOVE FOR YOU SHALL NEVER DIE
35 year old Frenchwoman Christelle Demichel married her boyfriend Eric in a ceremony at Nice City Hall on the French Riveria. Which normally wouldn’t make the news, except for the fact that her former policeman boyfriend has been dead for nearly 18 months. Eric was killed by a drunk driver in September of 2002. Appropriately, the bride was dressed in black. According to French law, a marriage can take place between a living person and a dead person as long as civic formalities have been completed and show that they were to marry. Their marriage had to receive authorization by the French president, Jacques Chirac, before it could occur. Christelle told reporters that "it could seem shocking to marry someone who is dead," and also mentioned that her feelings for him had not dimmed upon his death. The groom, for obvious reasons, was not in attendance. (021604/DAILY RECORD, UK)
SOMETHING CRUDE IN THE TOILET
Liela LeTourneau, an East Texas nurse, returned from work on February 2nd and found something crude in her toilet. A bubbling crude. Oil that is. Texas tea. In fact, the oil was gushing out of everything in her house connected to the water drainage lines. Her toilet, and of course, the kitchen sink. As she told the Longview News-Journal, "There was this black (ooze) coming out from my house. I thought, 'What have I left on? What has my son left on that's spilled over?"'. State and city officials believe that a mix-up in sewer lines might be the cause of the oil spill. Instead of being attached to a sewage line, her house is attached to a line used to dispose of saltwater, used in the production of oil. When the line backed up, it bubbled over. Now understanding the term bubbling crude, Liela has moved into a rental home due to the mess. (020904/News-Journal)

BARBIE AND KEN ARE SPLITSVILLE - Barbie (tm) and Ken (tm) are splitting up
after 43 years of dating. That’s right, the dolls that Mattel made famous. The famous
couple is officially over. Kaput. Russel Aarons, the vice president of marketing at Mattel
says that Barbie and Ken "feel it's time to spend some quality time - apart.". Aarons also
stated, "Like other celebrity couples, their Hollywood romance has come to an end," and
added that the couple "will remain friends". It probably should have happened earlier. As
any Barbie collecter should know, Barbie (also known as Barbara Millicent Roberts) and Ken
were actually named after Ruth Handler’s children, Barbara and Kenneth. Which made it a
little creepy that the dolls were dating in the first place. Ruth never actually intended
for Barbie to have a boyfriend, but public outcry was great enough that Ken was created as
her companion. Now for some happier news. By fall, Barbie may have her eye on an
Australian beach boy named Blaine. (Newsday/021604)

COLORFUL LANDMINE SOLUTION -
Aresa Biodetection, a Danish biotech company has develeoped a genetically
modified weed to help detect landmines. The weed has been modified to change
color when it detects nitrogen-dioxide in the soil, which evaporates from the
buried explosives. Once planted, the small plant (called a Thale Cress), will
turn red in the presence of a landmine. The plant isn't meant to replace other
methods, but to be used in addition to them. Other agricultural uses may be
found as well. Aresa Biodetection has succeeded in growing the plant and hopes
to launch limited tests this year and apply for field tests after that. A
prototype could be on the market within a couple of years.(MSNBC/020904)

GENDER BENDER - Preimplantation genetic diagnosis is an in
vitro fertilization technique where embryos are created outside the womb and
then tested for gender. Once the gender is selected, the embryos are then
implanted into the mother. In easier terms, you can now choose the gender of
your unborn child and have a near 100% certainty that the gender you want is
the gender you will get. The procedure costs nearly $19,000 and is available
at the Fertility Institutes in Los Angeles, California. Dr. Jeffrey Steinberg
of the Fertility Institutes is offering PGD gender selection to couples going
through fertility issues as well as couples without fertility issues. There
are also Fertility Institutes offices in Nevada and Mexico. Another clinic
that is offering the procedure is the ART Reproductive Center in Beverly
Hills, CA. The difference between this procedure and other procedures used to
select gender is that PGD looks to be a more accurate way to choose the sex of
your baby. Another option is the MicroSort technology which works by mixing
sperm with a DNA specific dye that helps separate the X chromosomes from the Y
chromosomes. Artificial insemination is used to conceive. Approximately 91% of
couples selecting girls get them, while approximately 76 percent of couples
selecting boys get boys and it generally takes more than one attempt. Each
attempt costs at least $2,500. (MSNBC/021604)
